Snow Balls

There was a large snow ball shrub next the the fence in the back yard when I was a girl. I remember picking the blooms, holding them in my cupped hands like new baby chicks, brushing the soft petals against my face. Later, my friend Laura and I would toss them up into the air and whack at them with our badminton rackets, sending white petals everywhere.

I love snowballs! I used to try to find perfectly round ones, without any brown petals. Then I would take them into my playhouse and pretend they were dumplings or some other food.
